ETCIC attended a recent event in Sheffield, which pointed the way towards future developments and developing technologies affecting businesses. The event, which was part of "Forefront Yorkshire" initiative, saw Ian Neild, BT futurologist and co-author of the BT technology timeline, address an audience of over 120 regional academics and business leaders. The event was co-ordinated by Yorkshire Science and Technology Network (YTSN) and took place at the Millennium Galleries in Sheffield. Mr Neild entertained and inspired his audience with his predictions for future technologies; including tiny displays which fit in the back of your hand, monitoring your health, and pacemakers which use RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology to send messages to paramedics to inform them a patient's heart is in difficulty, before a heart attack actually occurs. ETCIC was in attendance alongside partner organisation, the Association of British Ports, who were represented by Gordon Lugsdin, Assistant Operations Manager. "I was unsure of the impact that the event would have at first. However, we were challenged with new ideas and concepts that have a bearing on all of us", stated Mr Lugsdin. "I will certainly be in attendance at future events, and would encourage any other companies involved with ETCIC to do the same", he added.
