Tuesday, 15 May 2007

Chemical safety evaluation and registration company, SafePharm, has announced that it has enrolled six new recruits on to ETCIC's Postgraduate Certificate in REACH Management as part of a major exercise to expand its registration operation.

Mike Thomas, Marketing Director of SafePharm, says, "The Postgraduate Certificate in REACH Management, developed by the University of Hull and ETCIC, has come just at the right time for us, as we're engaged in a major recruitment programme. There doesn't seem to be any other course like this that will get people properly trained in this area."

The University of Hull and ETCIC has scored a European 'first' with the course, which comprises four, one-week taught modules plus an industrial placement (which may be carried out in the delegate's own workplace).

The first series of modules starts on 4 June 2007, to coincide with the implementation of the legislation, and the second series on 2 July 2007.

The taught modules will be delivered by leading experts in the various disciplines encompassed by the new legislation. The taught modules are:

  • Module 1 - The Regulatory Framework and Project Management
  • Module 2 - Testing and Data Analysis for Hazard Assessment
  • Module 3 - Exposure and Environmental Risk Assessment
  • Module 4 - Legal Issues, Authorisation and Business Preparation

Professor Gillian Greenway of the University of Hull is Academic Director of the new Postgraduate Certificate. It has been developed by Dr David Calvert of ETCIC with input from Yorkshire Chemical Focus (YCF) and Humber Chemical Focus (HCF), also supported by Yorkshire Forward, LGC, and REACHReady.

Jim Farmery, Head of Innovation at Yorkshire Forward comments, "Chemicals companies across the region can only benefit from this course as a vital introduction to the requirements of REACH legislation. This partnership between the ETCIC, and industry network organisations YCF and HCF will ensure that a relevant, business focused programme is delivered to companies, in line with the legislation coming into effect June 2007."

Course costs per delegate for the Postgraduate Certificate range from £300 for one day to £4,000 for the full course. The course does not attract VAT, being classed as an educational course.
