ETCIC and the University of Hull were delighted to be the hosts for a highly successful launch event of the Green STEM for the Future programme. The 3 year programme is to be managed by Klaus Selke of SETPOINT and funded by Yorkshire Forward, aims to link teachers and industry together to develop teaching material with a green bias in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.
![]() David Calvert, Jean Lambert, Klaus Selke and Andy Johnston Over 40 people attended the launch which was opened by Jean Lambert MEP, an ex teacher and a Green Party MEP since 1999. Jean outlined the regulatory framework in Europe designed to encourage environmentally aware programmes, but emphasised local action and in particular the need to address the gender bias. She pointed out that young girls like to work in an area they believe can make a difference and by emphasising the environment in the new teaching materials, she hoped more girls would be attracted to STEM based careers. Andy Johnson from the sustainable charity Forum for the Future called upon the audience to understand the environmental issues, act to make a difference and encourage others to follow their lead. Further speakers from the public sector included Yorkshire Forward, the University of Hull and East Riding Local Authority. This high quality line-up was completed by industrial speakers from Corus, ABP, Yorkshire Biofuels and First Light Energy. All speakers emphasised the importance of educating the next generation and their commitment to make the project work. Klaus Selke, the project leader of Green STEM for the Future, stated “We are delighted with the response to this project and look forward to now working with both the teachers and industry to develop these important new teaching materials” |
